Atlas Shrugged Essay Contest 2019Ayn Rand Institute has invited entries for the Atlas Shrugged Essay Contest 2023. For this, 12th class students, college undergraduate and graduate students from all over the world can apply. The essay should be 800 to 1600 words. There are three topics, from which the students have to choose the topic on which he/she wants to write an essay.

Ayn Rand has been a Russian-American writer and philosopher. His two novels Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged are quite popular. She is in favor of fairness. Ayn Rand Institute was established in his memory which propagates his ideas.

The Essay contest throughout the world is being organized by Ayan Rand since the previous 30 years. For the year 2015 Atlas Shrugged Essay Competition, a total of 500 prizes will be distributed amounting to $90,000 among the winners.

Contest Essay Topics

  1. Atlas Shrugged depicts a society of diminishing economic freedom. What is the philosophical motivation behind these controls and what is the practical result? What is hero John Galt’s answer, both practically and philosophically? Use the events in the novel to support your answer. In your answer, consider what Ayn Rand says in the lecture “Faith and Force.”
  2. Dagny says to Rearden: “If I’m asked to name my proudest attainment, I will say: I have slept with Hank Rearden. I had earned it.” Why is she so proud, and what does she mean by having earned it? How and why does Rearden’s attitude differ from hers? How do their attitudes toward sex relate to the wider themes of the novel? Consider also what Ayn Rand has to say in her essay “Of Living Death.”
  3. Atlas Shrugged is a story that portrays a dramatic conflict of characters and their values. What is the most significant conflict in the story? Is it the conflict between the creators and the looters? Is it the conflict with the creators’ experience in their souls? Is it something else? Explain your answer.

Eligibility for Competition

  1. Shrugged Essay Competition is open to students worldwide, except were abandoned by the law.
  2. The essay must be original and must not be copied from the others.
  3.  The candidates who are the employees of Ayan Rand Institute, its board of directors and their family members are not eligible to participate in this contest.
  4. The Ist prize winner of the previous year is not entitled to participate in this competition.

Awards for Competition

The winners of the essay competition can win about 230 prizes of millions. The details of the reward and its amount are given below.

  • A winner who secured the first place, US $ 25,000 i.e. around 18 lakh rupees shall be awarded.
  • The US $ 2,500 i.e. around 1.8 lakh rupees to the three winners who secured second place.
  • Five winners who achieve third place will be awarded the USD 500 i.e. Thirty-Six thousand rupees.
  • 100 US dollars to 50 finalists i.e. about 7 thousand rupees will be awarded.

How to Apply for Essay Competition

  1. Write an essay in 800–1600 words on any of the above topics.
  2. Visit the online submission portal https://apply.aynrand.org/.
  3. If you are applying for the first time then you will have to create a new account. Then log in using it.
  4. To prove eligibility you will first have to go through a quiz and identify yourself as a ‘non-educator’.
  5. Click the View Programs button
  6. Prepare submissions for the Atlas Shrugged essay contest and fill in the application form
  7. Applications can also be sent by post to the following address.
  8. The participant should require to mail the essays along with the following information written on a stapled cover sheet with the below-mentioned details to avoid the disqualification.
    • Name & Address
    • E-mail address (if available)
    • Name and address of your school
    • Topic selected (from the above)
    • Your current grade level
    • The name of the teacher who assigned the essay, if you are completing it for classroom credit. (optional)

Important Points

  • A student can send only one entry.
  • The essay should not contain spelling errors.
  • The entry is to be submitted by September 2023.
  • The institute may also extend the deadline if deemed appropriate.
  • Theft in the essay will be disqualified.
  • The final decision will be of the judges.
  • All winners, finalists, semifinalists and other participants will be notified by email or post by January 2023.
  • Any federal, state or local tax applicants must be filled
  • Spelling errors or corrections found in the essay will count against the final grade and should be removed before submission.
